Module 1: Introduction to Buddhism We begin our journey with an overview of the course and guidance on setting up a conducive meditation space. We will delve into the story of how the Buddha became the Buddha, laying the foundation for our exploration.
Module 2: Karma – Cause & Effect In this module, we will explore the three main branches of Buddhism and the fundamental concept of Karma – the law of cause and effect. We will also engage in a meditation to reflect on your own Karma.
Module 3: The Three Poisons & Their Antidotes We will examine the three poisons of greed, anger, and delusion, and their antidotes. You will learn about Metta, or loving-kindness, and practice a loving-kindness meditation to cultivate compassion.
Module 4: The Three Jewels This module introduces the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. We will explore the science of chanting and engage in a mantra meditation to deepen our connection to these sacred elements.
Module 5: The Four Noble Truths & Eightfold Path We will delve into the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, focusing on moral virtue (Sila) through right speech, right action, and right livelihood. A meditation on the Four Noble Truths will help integrate these teachings.
Module 6: Eightfold Path Part II Continuing with the Eightfold Path, we will explore concentration (Samadhi) through right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration, followed by insight/wisdom (Prajna) with right view and right resolve. We will practice the mantra “Om mani padme hum” in our meditation.
Module 7: The Teaching of Emptiness This module introduces Shunyata, or emptiness, a core teaching in Buddhism. We will explore its significance and implications for our practice and understanding.
Module 8: Padmasambhava: The Second Buddha We will learn about Padmasambhava, or Guru Rinpoche, and also about the four main schools of Vajrayana Buddhism and the key symbols and their significance. You will discover how to incorporate these symbols into your practice and engage in the 7 Line Prayer meditation.
Module 9: Deity Visualization This module introduces Vajrayana rituals and their importance. We will explore common rituals, their meanings, and the practice of Deity Yoga. A guided Deity Yoga meditation will help you connect with these profound practices.
Module 10: Dzogchen In our final module, we will discuss the role of the teacher and the importance of lineage in Dzogchen practice. You will engage in a Dzogchen guided meditation, integrating all that you have learned throughout the course.
