Coping with Covid-19: How are you doing?

Author of “Sage Sapien: From Karma to Dharma,” Guide, Speaker & Transformation Facilitator In the meditative work and journey I have been on and continue to be on, I am not afraid of isolation and it is something that brings me great peace in fact. But for others who have not spend time ashrams, or done much meditation, and have spent most of their adult life fixated on the external world, it’s more challenging. So I am a part of a free global quantum healing summit that grew to 25,000 members on Facebook in one week. Collectively, around the world, we are being called to help others who are struggling.

5 Ways to Calm TF Down

"Sometimes it can be extremely difficult to understand what is going on in the bigger picture, especially when it seems like the world is falling apart," says Chong. "We have the choice to either let our external environment to bring us down or to accept it as it is, for better, or for worse. By 'accept,' I don't mean by succumbing to complacency. Complacency would be resigning to indifference, while acceptance means taking charge of our anger and turning it into passionate/compassionate action.

Out yoga master heals in new book

Out yoga master and world traveler Johnson Chong planned on writing a short guide about self-empowerment, but the end result of his efforts was a full-length book, “Sage Sapien: From Karma to Dharma,” full of deeply personal anecdotes detailing his journey of spiritual exploration, self-acceptance and liberation. Chong said that the transition from a rebellious youth trying to find himself amid the social and familial chaos of New York City to a spiritual guru was a “gradual process,” but eventually, he found himself in a place where he could guide people toward physical and mental balance and self-acceptance.

How Meditation Helped Me Deal With Rejection From My Conservative Non-Accepting Parents

"So the only way to make sense of my childhood, my inability to fit in, was that the universe operated under the unrelenting Machiavellian principles. And the only way to survive was to be mindful of how to eat and not be eaten. Hence, the years of building up walls that kept people at a distance because I secretly hated myself. I hated myself because I hated my culture and how I was a product of collective unresolved trauma. The baseline was I was afraid of being hurt, and all my choices were considered with hyper-vigilance of my safety."

Gay Yoga Guru Johnson Chong Can Help Sort Out Your Karma and Dharma

You can judge Johnson Chong’s book by its cover. It’s pretty clear from its image, of Chong’s face and upper body painted in hues of red, blue, and yellow, that Sage Sapien: From Karma to Dharma is not just another random yoga book. And sure enough, Chong isn’t another random yoga teacher. Born in New York City to two refugees fleeing persecution in China, Chong is a queer person of color teaching in a predominantly white, straight field. And a self-described “weird gay person.” “People ask me all the time, ‘Who are you?’” Johnson told me over coffee at Union Square’s famous Jivamukti yoga center. “I’m whoever I want to be right now. It’s moving constantly. I play a lot of different roles.” Sage Sapien traces the development of some of those roles: from a gay kid growing up in a socially conservative, immigrant family to a struggling actor in New York to a successful teacher of yoga and spirituality.
Means Happy (London, UK)

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO REINVENTING YOURSELF AND FINDING HAPPINESS

In his book Sage Sapien, Johnson Chong shares his frank and entertaining journey of kissing self-hate goodbye and embracing self-awareness and self-love. I caught up with Chong for a behind-the-scenes look at the book. You start your book with a powerful quote by Jung – in a way, is your story an illustration of the American dream? You can reinvent yourself if you choose to? I think the ‘American dream’ means different things to different people. However, I do believe that the common themes the American dream carries are justice, equality and freedom. I believe that these big lofty ideals can only be realised if each person can dig deep within and re-write their programs of limiting beliefs. When Carl Jung says “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become,” we can look at it as a collective intention to reinvent ourselves not just as Americans, but as a global society. Every single person who is born into this world will face countless obstacles. If we don’t know how to develop a healthy relationship with these obstacles, they will fester into traumatic scars that will create the impression that we are nothing more than a collection of our greatest pain stories.

Yogi Johnson Chong on how meditation helped him through trauma

In yogic philosophy, there are five layers of kosas. The first three are the physical, mental and emotional. All three of those are connected. Everything is experienced through the body. If we have a thought, if we feel sad, there’s a physical sensation. Everything gets stored in the body. I like to think of it like a tree: if you cut a tree open, the rings will tell you if there was a drought or a lot of rain. Our bodies do that…they record trauma.
